Welcome to GamerU’s guide to the Draft Pick in League of Legends. Draft Pick is the most common way of playing League of Legends and all ranked games and (almost) all professional games are played this way. Draft Pick simply means that before players get into game they take turns picking champions based on a randomly selected order (or pre-selected based on roles in a professional game). The player who is first pick on either team will also be in charge of bans for that team; that is, getting to select three champions to remove from the game so that neither team can play them. After bans are completed, the blue team will get first pick of a champion before purple side gets two picks.

Picks continue this way, each team getting to select two champions, until the last pick on purple team gets to pick their champion knowing what everyone else has already picked. There are clear advantages and disadvantages to being first pick or last pick, or for that matter, anywhere in between. This method of champion selection keeps things relatively fair for players, who may also trade with other players to aid in the selection process (for example, getting the first pick to claim a popular champion for you). Roles are typically decided by pick order, although players may communicate in the chat box for optimal results in determining who goes where. Selection of your Runes, Masteries, and Summoner Spells can occur at any point after you choose your champion. Blind Pick, the alternative, more casual champion select method, features every player choosing their champion at once, a lack of bans, and no vision of your opponents’ picks (hence, Blind pick).
