Mediation is one of the alternative dispute resolution processes that are voluntary and informal in nature. The mediator acts as a middle person. They are trained professionals or, in certain cases, attorneys who help to dispute parties meet at a location to discuss their difficulties and try to reach an agreement. 
With mutual consent, the parties can select mediators, or the court can appoint arbitrators in pending litigation. The parties make the decisions in mediation. Mediators do not make decisions about what is right or wrong, or what is fair or unfair. The mediator cannot impose his opinion on the parties, but he can propose and assist them in reaching a mutually acceptable solution.
Mediators may hold joint meetings or can meet with the disputed parties together or separately and can suggest some alternative solutions, present options to compromise, or provide counsel and assistance but they cannot impose their opinion or try to solve the disagreement forcefully. In mediation, all parties are equally responsible for the outcome. The parties' role in mediation is not to persuade the mediator, but to reach an agreement that is agreeable to both parties. Its decision is non-binding until and unless parties reach an agreement.
