The notorious Buchenwald Concentration Camp, and its 139 sub-camps, was one of the largest in the Nazi concentration camp system. It was in operation from 1937 until the spring of 1945, when Gen Patton's 3rd Army liberated the camp. Over 280,000 people from 50 nations were imprisoned there here. The majority of the 56,000 dead, died from starvation, exhaustion and disease.

Notable prisoners included Dietrich Bonhoeffer (theologian and leader in the underground church) and Elie Wiesel
