Between the pandemic and low pay, a lot of experienced educators are retiring and new folks in the field are opting for different careers.

States are experiencing a shortage of teachers. Florida, for instance, has 5,000 teachers down, while other states are easing the requirements for substitute teachers. An education expert and a current high school teacher in Atlanta, Alfred Brooks, and Tale Lockett, the education expert and CEO of Algiers charters in New Orleans, joined “BNC Live” with Tashanea Whitlow to discuss how the shortage impacts students. The panel examines how the shortage in teachers is greatly impacted by low numbers of Black male teachers in the classroom.
