Blue-green algae is a serious danger to pets. Be aware of the risks and take precautions. Keep your dog safe.
Here are some ways to assess water for possible blue-green algae:
Look for a thick, scum-like mat on the surface of the water.
The water may be a bright green or blue-green color.
The water may have a foul odor.

Here are some ways to recognize cyanobacteria easily:
The algae may look like pea soup or paint.
It may have a thick, slimy texture.
It may be blue-green, green, or brown.
It may have a foul odor.

If you think your dog has ingested blue-green algae, contact your veterinarian immediately. Symptoms of poisoning can include vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, difficulty breathing, and death.

Avoid letting your dog swim in or drink from lakes, ponds, or rivers that have a thick, scum-like mat on the surface. Check with your local health department or animal control agency to see if there have been any reports of blue-green algae blooms in your area. If you are unsure whether or not the water is safe, err on the side of caution and do not allow your dog to drink or swim in it.
