Whitby is a place we came to countless times as children, staying either in the Youth Hostel here up by the Abbey or else further south at Boggle Hole. As kids we walked the Cleveland Way coastal path and the Lyke Wake Walk over the moors.

I wrote my first published book just north of Whitby, holed up in a cottage at Runswick Bay for several weeks before the manuscript was ready to be sent off to the publisher and on sale eight months later. I lead my first writing retreat in a property above Staithes.

So to come back to Whitby often is in my DNA. I love the wildness of the clifftops and the churchyard at night, the lay of sunlight across the roofs of the town and the shine of sea glass on the beach at Sandsend.

So to find an almost perfect coffee shop here in which to write overlooking the harbour, this just makes my day each time we visit.
