How does a fourth-generation entrepreneur with a 90-year-old family legacy in the tea industry, shake up the order and ‘innovate’? Bala Sarda lists a wide range of botanicals and herbs associated with tea consumption, all of which are primarily grown in India. The list itself is so long, it makes one wonder, “Why isn’t there a truly homegrown Indian tea brand that’s gone global, and why is Twinings of London selling more Darjeeling tea than any Indian brand?” Seeking an answer to these questions helped him settle on the core thesis of his brand, VAHDAM India—taking the best of native Indian wellness wisdom to the world. Once the ‘global brand’ bit was decided on, everything else was reverse-engineered from that core idea—a vertically integrated supply chain, a laser-sharp focus on product quality, customising one’s product range for different markets, environmentally-conscious packaging, and finally, giving back to the product’s value chain!

Episode 2 of Borderless Business unpacks what it takes to build a global consumer brand out of India. “It’s not nuclear science,” Bala tells FED Team Lead Ronak Pol. Yet, the fact that it hasn’t happened at scale and that there aren’t many global Indian brands to speak of suggests there are still many things to be learnt.
