On Saturday 23 April, 10 teams of students from Luxembourg high schools took part in the CanSat competition by launching their own satellite at an altitude of 1,000m using solid rockets.

The event took place on the military airbase of Elsenborn.

CanSat Luxembourg is a science and technology competition for secondary school students over 14 years old, organised by ESERO Luxembourg.

The task of the participating teams is to develop, build and test a mini-satellite with the dimensions of a beverage can. During the launch campaign, the satellite is carried to an altitude of almost one kilometre by a rocket. The CanSat must then descend to the ground using a parachute and carry out scientific work during the descent.

A CanSat serves as a model for a real space mission, as it goes through essentially the same phases as a real space mission: planning the mission, designing the satellite, testing the individual components and the overall system, carrying out the mission, processing and evaluating the data, and reporting the results. In this way, the CanSat competition offers students the opportunity to gain their first authentic, hands-on experience of a space project.

For this year's competition, registration was launched in September 2021.
14 teams from 8 Luxembourg schools registered for a total of 87 students.

In November, 14 teachers received an online training to be able to coach their team in the development of their satellite. The teams had about 5 months to build their mini-satellite.

A jury of 3 space experts monitored the teams' progress through regular reports that the teams had to submit.

On Saturday 23 May, 10 teams completed their CanSat and were ready to be launched at Elsenborn airbase
