Kangra is a district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, located on the southern escarpment of the Himalayas. It lies between 31˚ 21′ to 32˚ 59′ N latitude and 75˚ 47′ 55″ to 77˚ 45′ E longitude. The district is traversed by the varying altitude of the Shivaliks, Dhauladhar, and the Himalayas from north-west to south-east.

History

Kangra has a rich history dating back to ancient times. The region was mentioned in the works of Ferishta and Heun Tsang, a Chinese traveler who visited India during Harshvardhana’s rule (AD 629-644). The kingdom of Trigarta (Kangra) is also mentioned in the Panani literature, written between the 7th and 4th centuries BC. The district was ceded to British India in 1846, following the First Anglo-Sikh War, and was part of the British province of Punjab.

Geography

Kangra district is bounded by Chamba and Lahaul & Spiti districts to the north, Hamirpur and Una districts to the south, Mandi district to the east, and Gurdaspur district of Punjab to the west. The present Kangra district was formed on September 1, 1972, following the reorganization of districts by the Government of Himachal Pradesh.

Tourism

Kangra Valley is known for its picturesque landscape, arts, and crafts. The region is famous for its tea cultivation, which was introduced in the 1850s. The Palampur fair, established by the government, attracts visitors from central Asia. The valley is also home to numerous trekking trails, including the trek to the top of the Kangra Fort.

Notable Places

Maharana Pratap Sagar (Pong Dam Lake): A popular tourist spot built in 1975 on the Beas River.
Jain Temple: A well-maintained temple with accommodation and food facilities, located near the Kangra airport.
Kangra Fort: A historic fort with a museum showcasing the history of Kangra.
Trikuta Temple: A Shakti Peeth dedicated to Maa, with shops selling prasad and shringar items.
Infrastructure

Guest houses and hotels in the Kangra Valley offer breathtaking views of the valley and surrounding mountains. Modern amenities like high-speed internet and television are available in most hotels. Some hotels have in-house stores selling local products like honey, rice, and spices.

Language

The official languages of Kangra district are Hindi and Sanskrit, with many residents also speaking Punjabi and English.
