Name
The Potawatomi name means "people of the place of the fire". In their own language, they call themselves Neshnabek, which means "the True People".

Language
The Potawatomi speak a language that is part of the Algonquian family.
History
The Potawatomi were allied with the French in battles against the Fox Indians. After the American victory in the War for Independence, the Potawatomi were forced to move to reservations granted by the United States.

Bands
Today, the Potawatomi are divided into nine federally recognized bands. Some of these bands include:

Prairie Band Potawatomi: Also known as the Shkotani "Prairie People", this band stewards a herd of over 300 bison on the Potawatomi Reservation.

Forest County Potawatomi: This band has lived in Forest County, Wisconsin since the late 1800s. They are the largest employer in Forest County and have invested in the health, wellness, education, and environment of their people.

Citizen Potawatomi Nation
This nation operates a truck stop, gas stations, smoke shops, bingo hall, casinos, and more. They also have an industrial park called Iron Horse.
