As President Ronald Regan exemplified, the Republican party is to personify the tenets of limited government, free-market principals and individual liberty. How then, can Republican legislators in Oklahoma justify their support of the Common Core State Standards - standards for what students should learn in each grade, k-12, all across the NATION. Heritage Foundation and the CATO Institute - among other national conservative think tanks and policy organizations - believe that, because of the manner in which the Obama administration provided grants to states to implement these standards, the Common Core State Standards represent a federalization of education. Obviously, this situation violates the tenets of the Republican party, intrudes upon the 10th Amendment to the Constitution and even breaks existing federal law against the federalization of education. Republican leaders in Oklahoma - like Governor Nikki Haley of South Carolina who has been instrumental in stopping the Common Core in SC - must break with this initiative immediately and return to their party's tenet of local and state control of public education.
