The Woodhead main line to Penistone closed in 1981 and in 1984 Doug visits to record the former LNER 1938 ordered - but 1950 built, due to the interruption of WW2 - Class 506 1,500V DC EMUs which now faced withdrawal with conversion of the Manchester-Glossop-Hadfield commuter line to the new standard 25kV AC system.

The Class 506 were sisters of the sliding-door Shenfield AM6 units operating high frequency inner-suburban stopping services Liverpool Street - Romford - Gidea Park - Shenfield on the former intensive Great Eastern suburban lines.

After 30 years of intensive service, this small class of 8 x 3-car units were now life-expired. They met their end in Marple & Gillott scrapyard in the former Sheffield Attercliffe Goods Depot, where they can be sorrowfully seen towards the end of DCLI #06-3 'Huddersfield-Barnsley-Sheffield' already uploaded to this channel.

Also converted to 25kV AC was the old MSJA route - Manchester South Junction & Altincham Railway - running from the bay platforms at Manchester Oxford Road, and now enabling convenient through running of the BR AM4 EMUs to Altrincham on stopping services from Crewe etc.

Altrincham was destined to return again to DC operation (albeit 750V overhead) when it was converted in 1992 to be the initial southern terminus of Manchester Metrolink tram network with through running from Bury using the converted Manchester Victoria - Bury 3rd rail 750V DC route.

Interestingly in the GMPTE 1984 Project 'Light Rail Scheme' the initial three routes first proposed included Altrincham to Hadfield/Glossop, Bury to Marple/Rose Hill and Rochdale to East Didsbury. For those interested in the subsequent revisions, the 'Origins' paragraph of the Wikipedia 'Manchester Metrolink' page is now a fascinating read with the benefit of hindsight.

Doug Copley's Lineside Images

'Doug Copley's Lineside Images' are 68 titles filmed 1980's, 1990's & 2000's variously 12-90 minutes long. They come with Doug's own commentary and tend to follow lines of route, or particular workings, filmed over multiple return visits.

Doug's videos often include interludes of impressively vocal bird song!

In Alfred Hitchcock (filmmaker) style, Doug occasionally makes brief cameo appearances in his own films.

Doug gave annual shows to Peak Rail Sheffield Branch. When he died in 2008 his films were kindly made available to the Peak Railway Association by his family so that appreciative enthusiasts can continue to enjoy his work in his memory.

During his working life as a steelworks commissioning engineer he travelled extensively and the collection includes South America, South Africa, India, Turkey (steam), and Australia. The UK collection includes many secondary lines, and also industrial railways. A treasure trove.
