In Türkiye, nearly 3,000 varieties of wild grapes grow naturally. This land has cultivated wine grapes—Vitis vinifera—since ancient times. During the Greek and Roman eras, wine culture flourished, nurtured by traditions that celebrated its making and sharing. Even as recently as 120 years ago, in the final days of the Ottoman Empire, this region produced more wine than France, Italy, or Spain.

So why is it that today, we know so little about Turkish wine and its native grape varieties? On the Datça peninsula, where I live, I found someone who could answer that question with remarkable clarity. Locals pointed me in one direction: “If you want to know, go speak with Giray, the man behind Knidos Winery. He knows it all.”

And so I did. I went to him with every question I had long held back—and the stories he shared were nothing short of extraordinary.
