Robin Edgar reads from British astronomer Edward Walter Maunder's 1883 Sunday Magazine article titled 'Invisible Glories Of The Heavens' in which Maunder publicly expresses his opinion that the winged sun symbols of Assyria could possibly be inspired by, and depictions of, the "winged sun" pattern of the sun's corona that is seen during some total solar eclipses. To the best of my knowledge this is the earliest public expression by E. Walter Maunder of his subsequently more assertive and well-developed hypothesis to the effect that the bird-like pattern which is perceivable in the sun's corona during some total solar eclipses inspired the winged sun symbols of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, that he made public in an article published in the January 1st, 1897, edition of the popular science magazine 'Knowledge'.
