Karol & Dan Ryan’s excellent video on the location, architecture and history of the five surviving round towers in County Kilkenny, Ireland.
Contrary to what we were taught in school the round towers were not built to defend against the Vikings, they were primarily fancy bell towers and most were built after the Viking threat was gone. Only two other counties have five towers; Kildare and Mayo.
The main reason for the door being built above ground level was to support the structural integrity of the building rather than for defence. The towers were usually built with very little foundation and inserting the door at ground level would weaken the tower. Many of the 120 or so towers that were built remain today because their round shape is storm resistant, and the section of the tower underneath the entrance is packed with soil and stones as re-enforcing.
