2017 Gettysburg, SD Corn on heavy cover crop residue - No Till

This corn was planted on heavy cover crop residue that was grazed the previous winter. This residue caught 3-4 feet of snow and allowed the moisture to enter the no till topsoil, rather than blow off like it would a field that had little residue. It was also an extreme drought during the growing season and the snow catch helped the corn make it through the summer.

The field was planted on May 6, 2017 with the soil in excellent shape and we also set up numerous fertilizer studies to find the benefit of the cover crop to next year corn. We received 17.5 inches of moisture including snow from September 2016 to September 2017 we received most of the rain after August 1 2017. Our yield was 155 bushels with showing nothing put positive from the covers in 2016. This was a very mature field as far as soil health goes but showed no effect of the early drought in 2017 we had planned on doing this again in the summer of 2017 bit mid-July we were still very dry.

We will seed three fields in the summer of 2018 for full winter grazing of cover crops and we see nothing but positive from the cattle and also the soil health. I feel if you want to jumpstart your soil full season grazing is the right way to go. I understand it is all rainfall related but we need d figure out how to work with the rainfall we receive. The value of soil health for helping in dryer times is the key to making this work.


The time lapse camera is in a weatherproof solar powered housing and uses Canon DSLR cameras. They take 30 frames during the middle of the day. So events like heavy rain are hard to catch, because it is not continuous video, and most of the time they hit late in the day.
