In 427BC after the city state of Mytilene’s failed attempt to declare independence from the Athens – the Athenians angrily decided that all the men of the city should be put to death, and the woman and children sold into slavery.
The next day brought remorse and questioning as to whether that was really the right punishment or if their temper got the best of them.

So, the Athenians decided to have a second debate. The two arguments which the author Thucydides records were from Cleon and Diodietos.
