Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía joined Spain in mourning following the devastating high-speed train accident in southern Spain that claimed at least 39 lives. As the nation came to a standstill in tribute to the victims, the Spanish Royal Family delivered a heartfelt message of sympathy and solidarity.
Heir to the throne Princess Leonor and her younger sister Infanta Sofía appeared visibly saddened as King Felipe VI expressed his concern for the injured and offered condolences to the families affected by one of Spain’s deadliest railway tragedies in more than a decade. The royal message also praised the courage and compassion of the residents of Adamuz, who helped passengers and emergency services during the critical overnight rescue operation.
The tragic accident occurred near Adamuz in the province of Córdoba, leaving more than 120 people injured and prompting a nationwide response. Across Spain, institutions observed a minute of silence as ministers, lawmakers, and citizens paid tribute to the victims.
Spanish Royals King Felipe and Queen Letizia shared their concern on Monday (January 19) after the deadly accident that happened on Sunday (January 18) night in southern Spain.

At least 39 people died after a high-speed train derailed and collided with an oncoming one on Sunday night in the worst railway accident in the country since 2013.

The accident happened at 7:45 p.m. (1845 GMT) near Adamuz in the province of Cordoba, about 360 km (223 miles) south of the capital Madrid. It left 122 people injured, with 48 still in hospital and 12 in intensive care, according to emergency services.

"Let us hope that they recover as soon as possible," said King Felipe before state funeral of princess Irene of Greece in Athens.

Spanish Royals also expressed their gratitude to Adamuz's residents, who helped passengers and emergency services overnight.
