Cracks were found in a panel of the glass skywalk that just came into service at Yuntai Mountain Resort in Henan's Jiaozuo when a patrolling staff member was patrolling on the walk on Monday, during the rush National Day holiday.

Tourists were immediately evacuated and the 120-meter-high skywalk was closed for service.

"I was on a routine patrol at the time when I found a few tourists suddenly dispersed. They usually would crowd together to take pictures. Then I went over and found cracks in the glass panel," said Qin Zhikai, a worker at the resort.

This 68-meter-long skywalk started service in late September this year. Every piece of glass on it was qualified in accordance with the China Compulsory Certification procedure.

Construction representatives arrived immediately on site to investigate the causes of the cracks.

"For this kind of cracks, it's usually caused by external forces, such as something sharp. Glass is fragile, and it cracks instantly when receiving excess force made by a sharp object," said Wang Guofeng, representative of the construction side at Yuntai Mountain Resort.

However, no hard evidence has been found to prove the assumption, and the Resort administration urged tourists to follow the rules.

"Tourists must follow the rules and put on shoe covers. They are not allowed to wear high heels, bring walking sticks and other hard stuffs, or knock and stomp on the walk," said Pan Kangnian from the resort.

The skywalk is now closed for maintenance and will go through another safety appraisal by a third party before opening again to the public.
