STORYLINE:

Police scuffled with militant Muslim protesters on Monday when an Indonesian court sentenced their leader to seven months in prison for organising mob attacks on nightclubs and restaurants in Jakarta

Habib Rizieq Shihab, who heads the small, but high profile Islamic Defenders' Front, was found guilty of inciting violent acts and spreading hatred against the lawful government of Indonesia.

He sat passively as the verdict was handed down in the Central Jakarta District Court.

But outside hundreds of his supporters, wearing traditional white Muslim tunics, reacted angrily.

Many shouted: "Release our teacher! God is Great!"

The crowd briefly surged forward but was forced back by police.

The judge said Rizieq will be released in November, having already spent four months in custody.

Rizieq's group is generally dismissed as a criminal gang involved in protection rackets and extortion.

It is not thought to be connected to the al-Qaida linked Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist network accused in the October 12 Bali nightclub bombings that killed 202 people, and last week's attack on the Jakarta Marriott, in which 11 people died.

The organisation has gained notoriety in the past four years for mounting 'sweeps' through the capital's nightclub districts, breaking windows and smashing liquor bottles.

Damage from the groups actions has been comparatively limited and injuries few.

Rizieq has said that his actions were motivated by Islamic teaching, and that nightclubs selling alcohol were "places of sin."

The front disbanded in the aftermath of last year's Bali bombing, but claims to have recently reformed.

Rizieq is the latest Muslim radical to face justice in Indonesia, where the secular government is cracking down on vocal militant Islamic groups.
