A flat shoulder turn can cause the club to be out of position on the backswing and create a shift in swing planes on the downswing which reduces the efficiency of the motion. As a result, the player will usually have to make compensations on the downswing with the body or hands to square the club face consistently.

This is a simple drill that will quickly teach you what a correct shoulder turn should feel like in a great golf swing. Many amateur golfers, and even pros from time to time, suffer from a shoulder plane that is too flat in the backswing. In a great swing, your shoulders should turn back on a plane that is perpendicular to your spine at the address, Your shoulder plane is flat if your shoulders turn on a more horizontal plane.

The problem with a shoulder plane that is too flat in the backswing is that it takes your arms and the golf club out of position, and your hands and the club too far behind you at the top. This then creates a shift in your swing planes in the downswing, which reduces the efficiency of your golf swing and means that you will have to make compensations in the downswing in order to square the club face consistently.

A flat shoulder plane will also destabilize your spine and often cause your head and back to lift out of posture. As a result, you will lose power and have inconsistent ball striking.

In the ideal world, the shoulders should move perpendicular to the tilt of the spine on the backswing. A flat shoulder plane is when the shoulders turn on a more horizontal plane than the axis of the original spine angle.

The flat shoulder plane describes the plane of the shoulders as the student turns to the top of their backswing. At the address, the spine is tilted due to the setup position.

This thing is the key defining element of a shoulder plane: it really belongs in a power tool shop where hand tools are used to dial in a fit or shape. As a hand tool user solely I really do not have a reason to use shoulder planes and find that rabbet planes or chisels do all the same tasks even better.
