After a slow start to the day in AM Rush, it turned around with the R179 (M) Train to Middle Village in reverse peak. It only got better from that moment forward. It was rather calm and easy to traverse across Brooklyn towards Brighton Beach and then a great ride on the R68A (B) Train to Harlem-145 St awaited. Now in this ride, we would see something interesting to say the least when we were on the Central Park West Line 🔵🟠. We saw a (D) Train with the Yellow (D) rollsign. That bullet hasn’t been used since 1988 and it was used here. From April 26, 1986 to December 11, 1988, the north tracks of the Manhattan Bridge were closed and the (D) was split into two sections. The southern half would run between Coney Island and 57 St-7 Av via Brighton Local and it used the Yellow (D) designation. The northern half ran between 34 St-Herald Sq and Norwood-205 St and used the normal Orange (D) designation. Obviously, it didn’t run on the 🟡Broadway Line🟡, but it was a cool catch. The (B) also used the 🟡Broadway Line🟡 in that stretch and ran to Astoria-Ditmars Blvd using the Yellow (B) designation. The northern half of the (B) ran between 34 St-Herald Sq and Harlem-145 St during midday hours and it went to Bedford Park Blvd during rush hours, but it never ran south of 34 St prior to the reopening of the north tracks on the Manhattan Bridge. That half used the normal Orange (B) designation. Back then, the (D) and (Q) served Brighton Line and the (B) ran via West End and the (N) was still on Sea Beach, but the trend from 86-88 was that all trains via 4 Av Express ended at Astoria-Ditmars Blvd and all trains that went via Brighton Line🟠🟡 ended at 57 St-7 Av. Thought I’d look back at history since we saw a Yellow (D) rollsign. And this ride had lots to offer and offered a nice midday experience.
