Hello aviators, how are you today? My name is Magnar Nordal, and I am an ATR
captain and instructor. Today, I’d like to talk to you about What REALLY Happened in the Alliance Air Flight 746 Microburst Incident.

The ATR 72 was inbound from Rourkela with 43 passengers and 4 crew members on board. As the aircraft approached Bhubaneswar in poor weather conditions—including low visibility and heavy tropical rain—it was cleared for an ILS approach to runway 14. Despite minimum descent visibility appearing adequate on paper, the aircraft struck several approach lights and landed 43.5 meters short of the runway threshold. The crew reported a suspected tailstrike shortly after.

Could It Have Been a Microburst?
Captain shares his personal experiences with microbursts in both the Maldives and Bangkok, highlighting the violent nature of rapidly descending air columns that can cause sudden loss of lift during approach. With rapid weather deterioration noted in METAR reports just prior to the landing, a microburst or severe wind shear remains a possible contributing factor.
