The smoke rose from the Rodeo Fire, started on June 18, 2002, by Leonard Gregg, an out-of-work firefighter who hoped he might pick up shifts fighting the blaze. Two days later, roughly 15 miles west, the Chediski Fire was ignited by Valinda Jo Elliott, a lost woman trying to attract attention. The fires merged to form what was then the largest wildfire in Arizona’s history: the Rodeo-Chediski survivors watched the fire burn, attacked its flanks and waited for the monster to retreat.
Twenty years later, they are still there.
