All regiments of Indian army have made supreme sacrifices for our country and all are unique individually .Every regiment forming part of the elite Indian Army plays a pivotal role in achieving the overall operational efficiency. No war can be fought without the 100% active participation of each soldier. Behind every military victory, there are many “behind the scenes” whose role can never be under estimated. A Regiment is a fighting force formation which may comprise of smaller fighting units called Battalions. The regiments of the Indian Army's Infantry include the Brigade of the Guards, Rajputana Rifles, Gorkha Rifles, Punjab Regiment, etc. The word Regiment is derived from Latin word ‘regimen’ which means a rule or system of order, and describes the Regiment’s functions of raising, equipping and training of troops. Every Regiment has its own characteristic colours, uniform and insignia, and accomplishments in combat zone. After 1947, the Indian Army didn’t raise any more regiments based on caste or community but continued to raise regiments based on regions, like the scout regiments from Ladakh, Arunachal and Sikkim. While the Indian Army still maintains the eligibility criteria for the various religion or caste-based regiments, that is only true for the general rank and file. Commissioned officers can be from any caste, community or region. The Regiments are headed by a Colonel, who is a high-ranking officer. The Colonel of the Regiment is the head of the family and is responsible for the protection of the best interests of the Regiment. To know the top 10 regiments, watch the full video.
