On Sunday, seven fires broke out near Narbonne, in the Bizanet area.

By Monday morning, according to the Aude fire department, 400 hectares of vegetation had burned including 240 in Bizanet alone.

More than 650 firefighters, aided by Canadair, Dash and water-bombing helicopters, were mobilized at the height of the various operations. Several dozen residents and campers were evacuated.

At around 7am on Monday morning, the A61 freeway linking Narbonne to Toulouse reopened in both directions between Narbonne and Lézignan.

According to the Narbonne public prosecutor, a suspect was arrested and taken into custody for involuntary destruction by fire of woodland and forest.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the initial investigation has revelaed the suspect was a shopkeeper returning from a market, who did not realize that his portable heated pan had not been extinguished.
