After dealing with intermittent starting issues over the last couple weeks I decided that it was time to get serious about fixing the old junkyard starter that I bought about one year ago. My starter was grinding after the engine started, and occasionally would hesitate when trying to turn the engine over, as if there were a dead spot somewhere in the starter.
