143 - Off with the fairies… Is escapism something we should avoid?

We’re all about living with purpose and intentionality wherever you are and in every area of life. “Join us as we move from the daily drift to positive purpose.” is our common invitation, which often means facing up to the reality of our situation and not avoiding the challenges.

So we can often come across as being pretty down on escaping our lives into media and entertainment, which is why Matt decided we had to have a conversation about a rather intriguing quote from the famed author of The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings:

“I have claimed that Escape is one of the main functions of fairy-stories, and since I do not disapprove of them, it is plain that I do not accept the tone of scorn or pity with which 'Escape' is now so often used. Why should a man be scorned if, finding himself in prison, he tries to get out and go home? Or if he cannot do so, he thinks and talks about other topics than jailers and prison-walls?”
