Welcome back to the yHPA Gym, where we’re working out the details of the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland while joining a hypocise class at the back of the gym. Unlike the anterior lobe, the posterior lobe stores and releases two hormones produced by the hypothalamus: ADH and oxytocin. We’ll delve into how ADH regulates fluid balance by increasing water reabsorption in the kidneys, and how it can also cause vasoconstriction during severe hypovolemia. We’ll then cover oxytocin’s role in uterine contractions during labor and milk ejection during breastfeeding, highlighting its unique positive feedback loop that intensifies contractions until childbirth.
