We filled up the "Drapery Highway" with almost 60 custom pillows for a recent project. We needed to pump out this large pillow order quickly, so we had a huge cutting party to prepare all the pieces for assembly.

Once all the pillow front and backs were cut, we serged and organized them into piles along with the appropriate welt strips and work orders. Then we made the welt (some on the walking foot Juki sewing machine and some on the regular Juki sewing machine), serged the welt, then stitched the welt onto the fronts of the pillows. Some pillows were knife edge only, so no welt was necessary on those.

With all the pillow fronts and backs ready to go it was zipper time. The zipper colors all coordinated with the pillow fabrics and got hidden inside a small overlap. Then with the zipper stage finished the final sewing steps went fairly quickly. We pinned the last 3 sides of each pillow together to help keep the velvets from sliding around (sometimes we use staples when a velvet will not cooperate with pins). The pillows with self-welt get pinned with the fronts on top rather than the backs on top. That detail also helps keep the velvet fabrics lined up in the corners.

After the final sewing stage, we got to bring life to the pillows by stuffing them with the oversized fluffy feather/down inserts. The general rule on insert size is 2" larger than the finished pillow size. If the pillows are not full enough with feathers or poly-fill you might need to increase the size by as much as 4"- especially on large pillows. The 24"x 24" and the 28" x 28" pillows all needed more filling, so we sacrificed a few extra pillows and stuffed more feathers into the inserts until they were properly plump. That was a very messy day. Looking back, I wish I had that on camera, but we were racing the clock to finish these. The workroom looked like it had suffered a sleep over with a dozen kids having a pillow fight all night long!!!

The mess was worth the extra effort and time because the final pillow presentation was beautiful. We were proud of all the pillows and very happy to have finished them on time. Each group got wrapped up in plastic, labeled, and ready for pick-up the very next day.
