In this session, we practice Portuguese syllable stress through poetry. Using a classic stanza by Augusto Gil, we explore how accents guide rhythm and meaning, and how paroxytones, oxytones, and proparoxytones shape pronunciation.

You’ll learn:

Why most Portuguese words are paroxytones (stress on the penultimate syllable).
How oxytone words (stress on the last syllable) often end in ‑i, ‑u, ‑l, ‑r, ‑z, or ‑im.
How proparoxytones (stress on the antepenultimate syllable) require written accents.
Practical examples from Gil’s Balada da Neve and bonus practice with my original poem Promessa de Reencontro.

This exercise focuses on reading with rhythm and intention, not memorization. By repeating and internalizing stress patterns, you’ll begin to capture the natural flow of Portuguese.
