A refugee who waited for more than a decade to reunite with his wife and four children in Tasmania says he once again lives with hope.

Mohammad Zaki Rezayi fled Aghanistan in 2012, fearing persecution as a Hazara after his brother was killed by the Taliban.

Until recently, he was only eligible for temporary asylum visas, which meant his family were unable to join him in Australia.

Last year, the federal government made 19,000 asylum seekers who arrived before Operation Sovereign Borders eligible to apply for permanent residency, covering temporary protection and safe haven enterprise visa holders.

The visa allowed refugees, such as Mohammad, to sponsor their families to come to Australia.
