This video is a critical take on the Trinidad & Tobago National Budget 2026 looking specifically at the interventions for the Creative Industries and Cultural Sector in it. The talk notes the contrast between the mostly progressive Budget with its almost total blind spot for the Creative Industries and the Cultural Sector. The talk contrasts the Budget measures with the proposals put forward by Creative Stakeholders for the transformation of the Sector.

Because of global inflation and the economic contraction brought on by COVID, this is the worst period for citizens- and principally the Creative Sector- since the slump of the early 1980s. This then is a critical period demanding economic transformation. The thing is this: the same population that is the most in jeopardy at this moment is the same one that has the Intellectual property, talent, and capacity to transform our economy- the Artists. This talk looks in detail at the Creative Stakeholder proposals and makes a call for a Summit between Artists and the government to remove the chasm between the government’s ‘understanding’ of the Sector and global and local realities.

The time has come for a more sophisticated understanding of how we ramp-up the capacities of Local Industries, and execute international market penetration. At this critical moment of global socio-economic crisis- we need to be innovative in our industrial maneuvers in order to empower our citizens, increase foreign exchange earnings, and diversify our Economy.
