Parental criticism can deeply impact a child's self-worth, leading to low self-esteem and a belief in their unworthiness of love and respect. This often manifests in behaviors such as poor eye contact, a slumped posture, and difficulty advocating for themselves. Criticized children may develop perfectionism, striving for impossible standards to avoid further disapproval, and engaging in harsh negative self-talk that mimics their caregivers' criticism. They struggle to accept compliments, often downplaying their achievements, and may become hyper-critical of others, normalizing derisive communication. Additionally, they can become hyper-defensive, constantly anticipating and defending against criticism, and may turn to people-pleasing, sacrificing their own needs to avoid negativity. Excessive self-reliance, social anxiety, constant comparisons, frequent apologizing, trust issues, and difficulty regulating emotions are also common consequences, reflecting the deep and lasting effects of a critical upbringing.
