Teri Polo is the daughter of Vincent Polo, a stereo systems designer, and wife Jane Gentry, a homemaker. Sister of Mike and Steve Polo. Paternal granddaughter of Vincent Masters Polo and Violet Elizabeth Lewis. Maternal granddaughter of James Herman Gentry and Dorothy Everhart.
She and photographer Anthony Moore eloped in Las Vegas, Nevada, one day after becoming engaged in a Sears store.
A straight-A student at Holy Cross Elementary School in Dover, Delaware, where she grew up, studied Ballet from ages 6 to 17, signed by the Petite modeling agency at age 17 and dropped out of high school, where she had been an honors student, at age 17 to move to New York City to pursue acting.

In 2009, she took a substantial loss ($550,000) selling her five-bedroom, 3,077-square-foot, Asian-inspired house in Manhattan Beach, Los Angeles County, California for $1.95 million. She originally paid $2.5 million for it in 2006. She, her two children, and their three dogs relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina.
In April 2014, Polo had to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy, declaring less than $50,000 in assets after owing 3/4 million in back taxes and debts in excess of $800,000. Her paternal grandfather (Busi Polo) was born to Italian immigrants. Her other ancestry is German (including an immigrant great-grandmother), English, and small amounts of Scottish, Scots-Irish (Northern Irish), and Welsh.
Her paternal grandmother was the daughter of Clyde Reuben Lewis and wife Tena Belle Opdenhoff (b. Germany), paternal granddaughter of Thomas M. Lewis and wife Abigail "Abby" Garrison Bloom and maternal granddaughter of Edward Herman Opdenhoff (b. Germany) and wife Elizabeth Catherina / Catharine Gutter (b. Germany).
Her maternal grandfather was the son of Mack Coy Gentry and wife Lucille Adeline "Addie" May Bennett, paternal grandson of James Jesse Gentry and wife Mary Alice Yates and likely maternal grandson of George Wilson Bennett and wife Lillian I. Perry.
Her maternal grandmother was the daughter of James Luzerne / Louis Everhart and wife Nettie Remsen Brown, of Clan Broun, paternal granddaughter of Phillip Edgar Everhart and wife Ida Sarah McCorney and maternal granddaughter of James Monroe Brown, of Clan Broun, and wife Frances Rankin Beall.
