Nepal Protests 2025: Nepal is witnessing its worst political unrest in years as Gen Z-led protests, triggered by a controversial social media ban and deep-rooted anger over corruption, forced Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli to resign. Demonstrators stormed government offices, Parliament, and private residences of top leaders, setting ablaze the homes of at least five former prime ministers, including Oli, Prachanda, Deuba, Madhav Nepal, and Khanal. Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, wife of former PM Khanal, tragically died of burn injuries after their Kathmandu house was torched. Former PM Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife, Foreign Minister Arzu Deuba, were assaulted, while Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel and MP Eknath Dhakal were stripped and paraded. Protesters also set fire to Nakkhu Central Jail, freeing RSP chief Rabi Lamichhane. The Nepal Army has stepped in to take charge of security, appealing for peace while resisting direct political involvement. Meanwhile, India has put its borders on high alert and Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened the Cabinet Committee on Security to assess the crisis.
