The Wadia shipbuilders—Parsi master carpenters from Surat—built wooden warships at the Bombay Dockyard from the 1730s. Bombay teak, copper sheathing, exacting joinery. Under Lovji Nusserwanjee Wadia and his descendants, the yard launched vessels for the Bombay Marine and the Royal Navy. Early graving docks contributed in turning a tidal creek into an industrial harbor. Their ships sailed long: HMS Trincomalee (launched 1817 at Bombay) still floats as a museum in Hartlepool; HMS Cornwallis had the Treaty of Nanking (1842) signed aboard her; HMS Minden served in the War of 1812. Wadias signed their work with pride and ritual; crews trusted the teak to outlast storms and shipworm. Indian craftsmanship quietly underwrote global sea lanes. Through empire and after, the yard adapted to iron, then steel; the family remained synonymous with Bombay-built quality.
