Democrats Remember Sandy Hook and Renew Calls for Gun Reform

Democrats across the United States marked the 13th anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting by renewing calls for stricter gun safety laws. The 2012 attack in Newtown, Connecticut, left 20 children and six adults dead, making it the deadliest mass shooting at a U.S. elementary school.

The renewed push comes amid recent mass shootings, including a deadly attack at Brown University in Rhode Island and another at a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney, Australia. Lawmakers argue these tragedies highlight the continued urgency of gun reform.

Several Democratic officials used social media to advocate for measures such as universal background checks and an assault weapons ban, emphasizing that thoughts and prayers are not enough to stop gun violence. They criticized congressional inaction and warned that school shootings continue to terrorize American families.

While the 2022 Bipartisan Safer Communities Act expanded some background checks and funded mental health and crisis intervention programs, no major federal gun-control legislation has passed this year. Gun policy in the U.S. remains divided, with Democrats pushing for tighter laws and Republicans largely opposing new restrictions.
