We find this literary device in Daniel chapters 2–7:

In chapter 2, King Nebuchadnezzar has a dream (1A)

In chapter 3, Daniel's friends face persecution in the fiery furnace (2A)

In chapter 4, Nebuchadnezzar is humbled (3A)

Nebuchadnezzar praises God – Focus point

We then see this reversed:

In chapter 5, Belshazzar is humbled (1B)

In chapter 6, Daniel faces persecution as he's thrown into the lions’ den (2B)

In chapter 7, Daniel has a dream (3B)


In light of this, we then compare the contrasting stories of Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar, looking at God's judgement, mercy and the characters of the two kings.
