Описание к видео Newcastle Stairs - Battery Stairs; Long Stairs; Castle Stairs; Dog Leap Stairs

Battery Stairs - The battery was called the Half Moon Battery and its use is recorded during the English Civil War in 1644. It was recorded that the site was used to secure the river and quayside against the Scots who attempted to attack from the Gateshead side of the river. After 8 months of defence, Newcastle would surrender to the Scots and the Parliamentarians. Records show that the battery was improved and remodelled after 1750. Access to it was called the Half Moon Entry.

Long Stairs - Also known as the "Langstare," are a historic set of steps dating back to the 13th century. They served as a crucial link between the Close, a street along the Quayside, and the upper part of the medieval town. The stairs are located near the Cooperage and the "Buttress" merchant's house, and they lead up to Queen's Lane.

Castle Stairs - An historic set of steps that connect Sandhill and the Quayside area with Castle Garth and the Castle Keep. They are believed to have been used since at least the early 16th century and possibly even earlier, as they likely provided a route from the Roman fort and later castle to the river crossing. The stairs have been modified and adapted over time, with buildings encroaching on them and various alterations occurring in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Dog Leap Stairs - Also known as ‘Dog Loup’ stair is an historic stone stair leading from Castle Garth to Side. The name refers to ‘a narrow slip of ground between houses’. In 1772 Baron Eldon, later Lord Chancellor of England, eloped with Bessie Surtees. The couple made their escape on horseback up Dog Leap Stair. Dog Leap Stair is mentioned in the 1978 song ‘Down to the Waterline’ by Dire Straits.
