If you are interested in accumulating wealth and growing your net worth then you are going to need to purchase assets you expect to appreciate in value over time. I'll say it again, purchase assets you expect to appreciate in value over time

This could include -
1. Investing in a portfolio of publicly traded stocks
-This can be accomplished by purchasing mutual funds or exchange-traded funds

2. Purchasing residential real estate, becoming a land lord and renting out the property.
-You will not only receive rental income, but hopefully own a property whose value will appreciate over time

3. Starting a business that becomes more and more profitable over time and then one day selling the business or shares in that business

In the case of purchasing a portfolio of stocks, a useful strategy includes making regular contributions to your portfolio over long periods of time. This is commonly referred to as dollar cost averaging.

It will be importing to consider the volatility of the asset or assets you are purchasing to determine whether you will be comfortable maintaining your investment position during a market decline.

It's unlikely that simply placing extra funds into a low yielding products such as a money-market fund or bank savings account will provide you with the long-term, ROR you need to accumulate wealth.

The purpose of accumulating the wealth is to provide you with more financial freedom during your lifetime as well as help offset the expenses you will incur during your retirement or semi-retirement as the case may be.
