The Om Sat Chit Ananda mantra, also known as the Moola Mantra or Root Mantra, is a powerful Sanskrit chant that invokes the highest divine consciousness and bliss.
The origins of this mantra are rooted in the ancient Hindu philosophy of Advaita Vedanta, which emphasizes the unity of all existence and the realization of the ultimate reality or Brahman. The mantra is believed to have been composed by the great Hindu philosopher Adi Shankara in the 8th century CE.
The mantra consists of several Sanskrit words with profound spiritual meanings:
Om: The sacred primordial sound representing the ultimate reality or Brahman.
Sat: Existence, being, or truth. It signifies the formless, unchanging, eternal aspect of the universe.
Chit: Consciousness or awareness, referring to the universal consciousness that pervades all existence.
Ananda: Bliss, joy, or happiness - the state of pure, divine bliss that comes from realizing one's true nature as Brahman.
Together, "Om Sat Chit Ananda" represents the highest conception of the divine - pure existence, consciousness, and bliss. It is considered the quintessence of the Upanishads and Vedanta philosophy.
The mantra then continues with additional phrases:
● Parabrahma: The supreme, absolute Brahman or ultimate reality.
● Purushottama: The supreme being who incarnates in human form to guide humanity.
● Paramatma: The supreme soul or divine self that resides within the heart of all beings.
● Sri Bhagavati Sametha: United with the divine mother, the feminine aspect of creation.
● Sri Bhagavathe Namaha: Salutations to the divine father, the unchanging source of creation.
In essence, the Om Sat Chit Ananda mantra is a profound invocation and acknowledgment of the highest divine reality - the formless, conscious, blissful Brahman that is the source, sustainer, and goal of all existence.
