As a keystone species, Sea Stars are incredibly important parts of our near shore ecosystems, from tidal zones and eel grass beds to kelp forests, and can be an indicator of overall ecosystem health. From tide pools to underwater transects, we've been tracking the impacts of Sea Star Wasting Syndrome (SSWS), a devastating mass mortality event that’s decimated populations from California to Alaska, in our local waters to monitor how this pandemic is impacting our ecosystems.

Our Marine Field Coordinator, Sophie, has been leading sea star surveys along the coast — and she's looking for your help!

This summer marks the 11th year of data collection as part of a North America-wide citizen science effort through MARINe. With the help of volunteers (that’s you!), we’re gathering crucial long-term data that helps scientists and communities understand how these ecosystems are shifting.
