A monstrous fatberg the weight of THREE ELEPHANTS has been found under the streets of north Manchester.  The giant lump of congealed fat runs all the way from HMP Manchester, known as its former name Strangeways, to Hornby Street.  The mass of solid waste is so big that the job of removing it is likely to run into the new year.  It's almost as long as Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square is high.  Engineers will now have to blast the blockage with specialist jets to break it up. They will then have the unenviable task of removing pieces by hand.  Fatbergs are formed when fats, oil and grease are poured down sinks and drains.  They then merge with other items that shouldn't be flushed down the toilet like wet wipes, cotton buds, nappies, contact lenses and dental floss.  United Utilities bosses are asking people to avoid pouring grease down drains this Christmas, as it causes blockages.  Andrew Peet from United Utilities said: “It’s a difficult, dirty and dangerous job and our teams will be working through the night to clear this giant fatberg. The sheer size of this great lump of lard means its removal is likely to take some time and will probably carry on into the new year.  “Every year there are 25,000 blockages in sewers across the North West which can cause untreated sewage to run into homes, gardens, streets and even end up in rivers, the sea and on beaches but that could have been avoided if fat, oil and grease was disposed of correctly.  "After you’ve cooked your turkey and roast potatoes this Christmas please think before you pour the grease down your drain.
