DROWNING RISKS | Rip currents bring drowning risks to Palm Beach Co. beachgoers visiting for the holidays, CBS12's @JackWuNews reports.

While many are heading to the coast this Christmas Eve, local authorities are warning of hidden dangers. The National Weather Service has issued a high rip current statement through Wednesday evening, an alert underscored by Palm Beach Fire Rescue’s Tuesday rescue of a 48-year-old man swept away by a powerful current.

Yellow and purple flags flew across Palm Beach County on Wednesday, signaling moderate surf and dangerous marine life. Lexington Bohn with Palm Beach Ocean Rescue, who saved three swimmers on Tuesday, remains on high alert.

“I'm looking out for any hands up in the air. This is kind of the universal signal, if you can do that. If not, and you just are away from a lifeguard, swimming parallel to the shore is the best thing you can do to increase your chances of getting out of the rip current,” Bohn explained.

The fast-moving currents, which can pull swimmers the length of a football field, have families on edge.
