Hi, I’m James, and welcome to Day 29 of the 31 Day Beginner Guitar Course.

I hope you got your fingers around the picking part in Mr Brightside — that was definitely one of the trickier songs we’ve tackled so far, so well done for sticking with it.

Today we’re learning Free Fallin’ by Tom Petty. This lesson introduces new suspended chords and a really important rhythm skill: changing chords on unusual beats.

This is all about feel, timing, and control.

In Day 29, you’ll learn:
• The chords used in Free Fallin’
• How to transition between them smoothly
• What suspended chords are and how they sound
• How to change chords on unexpected beats
• A simple strumming approach to focus on the rhythm
• The eighth-note strumming pattern for the song
• How to play the whole part slowly first, then at full speed

We’ll start by learning the chord shapes and transitions, then focus on where the chord changes actually happen, then add the strumming pattern and play the whole part through together.

Take this one slowly. This song only works when the timing feels right, so focus on counting, listening, and staying relaxed.
