What Are The Most Common Leaks In Pools?

Of course there any many kinds of pools like vinyl liner pools, concrete pools, fiberglass pools etc. and each of these can and will leak in unique ways, but here are three of the three worst offending swimming pool leaks:

1) Pool lights can leak for a variety of reasons but the most common of them is relating to a failure around the pipe conduit connection to the light niche. Some lights use rubber stoppers to waterproof the niche, however many pool lights have no protection against water leaving the niche and entering the conduit and that means that if the conduit fails in any way this will allow water to escape your pool.

2) Pool returns installed incorrectly will create a leverage hinge point where the surrounding ground in the overdig around the pool will settle over time and take the pipes with them, and if you have a straight section of pipe coming off the wall return this can definitely result in sheering of the pipe where it meets the back side of the pool wall.

3) Pool skimmers can leak at the pipe connection points especially where ABS body skimmers meet PVC pipes. Skimmers also leak from cracks in the bottom of the body, from freeze damage, around the mouth where it meets the pool wall, and especially along the bottom and sides of the throat.

Pool leaks can be hard to find and can give confusing symptoms of water loss but a bucket test is a great and simple way to find out whether your pool is leaking or not, and if so whether this is likely in the plumbing system or within the pool structure somewhere.
