Roy explains the importance of lipid nanotechnology in delivering drugs to the correct location and how it can enable the use of novel drugs. He highlights the future relevance of treating disease and its potential to help mankind. Roy van der Meel is a biomedical engineer specialized in nanomedicine and RNA therapeutics. After obtaining his PhD from Utrecht University in The Netherlands, he joined Professor Pieter Cullis’ lab at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada in 2015. During his postdoctoral tenure, he gained extensive experience with lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery platform technology that has enabled the approval of the first siRNA therapeutic and mRNA vaccines for COVID-19. In 2019, Dr. Roy was recruited back to The Netherlands at the Eindhoven University of Technology by Professor Willem Mulder and appointed Assistant Professor in the Precision Medicine group. His current research is focused on establishing platform nanotechnology for delivering RNA therapeutics to specific immune cells and precisely regulating the immune response. Besides being a scientist, Roy is a husband and proud dad of twins. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
