Описание к видео Søren Koch: Session work with a 1964 Hofner 176 Galaxie

BRINGING OUT THE WEIRD AND WACKO GEAR-LOVE! Last post showed my beloved '63 Strat in use. It does not get more classic or mainstream than a Strat or a Les Paul, I know. Everybody's using them - and obviously, me too!. But as much as I love classic Fender and Gibson guitars, I also often find myself bored with looking at or listening to guitarists (or myself for that matter) doing classic licks on those classic tools for god knows which time in rock history and it often makes me eager to walk into lesser known territories and explore the weird and wonderful. The German made Hofner guitars are such beasts. Hofners first came to my attention at the age of 12, when friends of my family gave me what was left of a late 50s Hofner 457 jazz guitar that my dad and I then decided to bring back to life. That started an interest in Hofner guitars which, to put it short, means that I own about 20 various 50s and 60s Hofner models these days. Back when I started collecting them, no on else wanted them and you cold easily find them as bargains at flea markets on in the yellow pages. Things have changed though, so I don't buy as many vintage Hofners as I used to anymore 🙂. Hofner is absolutely still around and making great guitars, and I am proud to say that my band The Beatophonics has been acknowledged as "official Hofner artist" (have a look at our profile on the official Hofner web site). I must admit that the most recent Hofner in my collection at the moment is a 1967 model, but as "official Hofner artist" I better look into that 🙂. This one is a 1964 Hofner model 176 - also known by the name Galaxie. It has knobs to satisfy the most knob-twirdling fanatic for days! Like most old Hofners, two of the three pickups on this had a shortcut in the winding circuit, which meant it had to pass thru the hands of my favourite guitar doctor, Claus Holm of Hansen Guitars. He brought this and another '65 sunburst Hofner 176 (with white pickguaad) that I bought and restored at the age of 17, back to life. Yesterday I was about to put a guitar solo on another of my friend Nikolaj Muldkjærs wonderful songs and suddenly had the feeling that I needed to do "something weird" with that. Maybe it was due to having done the very classic Strat-thing the day before. I have loads of weird and wacko stuff to pull out of the closet, if I want to go down that alley. I decided on giving the Hofner a try. Straight into the amp it still sounded to average, so I added this Hofner Rotor Sound box. A late 60s kind of pseudo-Leslie or phaser that I have had for years but haven't used much (you can see the Rotor Sound box located on the chair to the left of me in the video). It certainly sounds "weird" - and that was Nikolajs response as well when I send him the recording! 🙂. What we ended up with you will maybe find out later if you keep on following my posts (or look into my YouTube-channel where these videos will be uploaded as well. And while you are there, please give a LIKE). So is the Hofner 176 a great sounding guitar or an easy player?. Well, maybe not, but it certainly makes me think in different directions than most of the average stuff and I found that a really positive thing! It's not the kind of guitar you bring along if you are a guitarist in a wedding band who are supposed to do anything from Justin Bieber to Slayer. Even with all these knobs the versatility is limited. But man, I love playing around with stuff like that, even as in this case, it gets a bit too much 🙂.
