=====================

I think this video may be of use to the (very welcome) newcomer who may be familiar with my name but would like to know a bit more. There is some good old commonsense here, and I tried to avoid getting boring. I cover the ‘Yes’ and ‘King Crimson’ years in about 4 minutes flat. We also spent some time on my influences, my sound, my drums, my bands, my performances; pretty much the whole kit and caboodle.

Although I’ve said similar things before, I might add that I’m not an exponent of chops, although I always seem to have just about enough to get by. Even ‘getting by’ is really tough in the world post-JoJo Mayer. Increasingly for me, it’s about how and why I do things with other people in real time, rather than what I can or cannot do in my bedroom with no-one else around. I’d rather play ‘Three Blind Mice’ with others for an hour than practice rudiments for the same length of time.

If I am useful at all, it is perhaps in thinking of interesting things to do within the rhythm. Think of an engineer in the boiler room of an old fishing boat, or perhaps a really sleek new one, with an oily rag and perspiration on his brow. That’s me in King Crimson. How can we make this song (or boat) go smoother? In fact, tinkering around within the engine-room of a sleek new band was always my first love. The genre in which I tinkered made little difference. Some genres or styles (jazz) were more accepting of difference than others (rock), but I often felt I didn’t ‘fit in’ with accepted norms in either area. So don’t worry about not fitting in with a band that you don’t really want to be in anyway. Find some people who will fit in with you and form your own band!
